Create a function

Procedure

Choose Home tab → Systems Engineering group → Function.
Select the parent function for the new function.
In the Reference Designation group, in the Letter Code list, select the corresponding letter code for the function.
In the Function Information group, in the Name box, type the name of the function.
In the Description box, type a description for the function.
(Optional) When you create a child function in Teamcenter Integration mode, you can set the instance name in the Function Instance Information group, in the Instance Name box.

Note: If the function is saved to Teamcenter Integration, the instance name will be stored as a BOM Line attribute.
(Optional) In the Parameters group, Add Parameter. You can edit the parameter in the parameter table.
(Optional) While in Teamcenter Integration mode, click Teamcenter Attributes in the Attributes group to view attributes located in Teamcenter Integration.

You can only edit attributes; attributes cannot be added or deleted.

Note: You must specify the function form type in the Customer Defaults dialog box (Mechatronics Concept Designer node → System Navigator) and fill out the Form Types group.
Click OK.

This procedure reveals the attribute structure of a function object in MCD:

Letter Code (Reference Designation) — a classification/reference-designator code for the function, following the IEC 81346 reference designation scheme used elsewhere in MCD.
Name — the function's name (an active verb + noun per the Function shortcut commands guidance).
Description — free-text description.
Instance Name — Teamcenter Integration only, for child functions; persisted as a BOM Line attribute.
Parameters — user-added, editable parameter table on the function itself (these are the "output parameters" referenced in the Systems engineering models workflow topic, used to associate function outputs with requirements).
Teamcenter Attributes — read/edit-only view (no add/delete) of the function's attributes as defined in Teamcenter, exposed via a Form Type that must be pre-configured in Customer Defaults.
