Creating and managing systems engineering models > System Navigator
System Navigator
Use the System Navigator to view the requirements, the functional model, and the logical model of a product, and to communicate any changes to the other teams on the project. This is the primary browsing/authoring UI for all three systems engineering model types in MCD, and is directly relevant to how requirements imported from Teamcenter are viewed and navigated.
Purpose of each model, as framed by the System Navigator
- Requirements model — Use to document goals and system specifications.
- Functional model — Use to identify methods to meet the goals.
- Logical model — Use to identify components that complete functions.
The combination of requirement models, functional models, and logical models drives the design and properties of the physical part models.
Dependent objects and cross-navigation
You can use the System Navigator to attach dependent objects that help navigate across the requirements, functional model, logical model, and their physical representations such as mechanical components, electrical devices, operations, or physics objects.
Teamcenter Integration behavior
The System Navigator has expanded functionality when using Designcenter NX with Teamcenter Integration. Requirements, functional models, and logical models created in Teamcenter Integration can be added to the System Navigator. Trace links created in Designcenter NX are also created in Teamcenter Integration if the requirements, functional models, and logical models are saved to Teamcenter Integration from Designcenter NX.
This is a key traceability/sync behavior: tracelinks (e.g., "Derive Function" from a requirement, "Derive Logical" from a function, or "Start Tracelink") authored natively in Designcenter NX round-trip back into Teamcenter Integration on save, keeping the two environments' traceability graphs consistent.
UI layout
| # | Panel | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Main panel | Displays the Requirement, Function, and Logical models as a tree structure. |
| 2 | Details panel | Displays the parameters of a selected requirement, function, or logical. |
| 3 | Dependency panel | Displays the related objects of a selected requirement, function, or logical. |
The Dependency panel allows you to add related objects that help define other representations. For example, you can add a component to the Mechanical folder of a selected logical.
